The Milwaukee metro area has seen a pretty brutal winter this year. There’s even been one record-breaking storm.
That’s why we wanted to take just a few moments to discuss winter storm safety. We also wanted to give you some resources that will help yous tay safe this winter–and every other winter.
After all, we want everyone to make it through this nasty weather. We want to see you out there in the spring and summer, enjoying your fences, pergolas, and gazebos!
Pay attention to the weather.
A lack of information can be hazardous. Download a weather app to your phone or resolve to check the weather channel each morning. This will give you access to important alerts.
The National Weather Service usually offers some recommendations along with these alerts. Make sure you follow them.
You will also need to understand winter storm terms in order to correctly interpret these watches and warnings.
Be prepared.
The Red Cross offers a handy winter storm safety checklist for the home. You can use it to make sure that everyone (even your pets) makes it through these storms safely.
Don’t forget your vehicle. Make sure to have your mechanic winterize your car, and make sure that you’re carrying an emergency car kit, just in case you end up stranded. See this link for two great checklists; one will tell you what your mechanic needs to do, and the other will tell you what you need to bring with you. You’ll need to click on the “Winterize Your Car” dropdown.
Minimize travel.
Sometimes you just have to get out on the roads, storm or no storm. But you should avoid the roads whenever you can.
Many winter storm fatalities happen on the roadways as vehicles lose control on icy roads. If you have to get out there, take it slow.
Stay sane–spring will get here eventually!
